Is it more like a drive thru or like a sit down 7 course meal?

For the past three weeks our church (Nueva Vida en Cristo) has been challenged in the area of prayer. I'll shamefully admit that often my prayer life reflects more of a drive thru than a personal one on one time with God. What habits of thinking get us to request in such a manner so quickly? What is my view of God when I do this? We don't like it when the only time we see some people is when they want something from us. Our view of them is that they only need us when they are desperate. God wants us to show that we are truly dependent on Him. In Matthew 6 Jesus gives a model prayer. It gives us an example of how to have a deeper relationship by remembering who God is and who we really are. God is over everything. He doesn't make mistakes. He is good and what He is doing is good. He understands what we are going through and He cares. We on the other hand are dependent on God. We know nothing, really. We make plenty of mistakes and we tend to be very selfish and not gracious.

Our prayer life should be consistent. Problems and difficulties in our lives shouldn't be the driving force that brings us to our knees. God and who He truly is should humble us. We need God every second of every day but we don't focus on this enough and therefore why we sometimes pray as if we are going through a drive thru rather than enjoying a full course meal with our Lord.
Sam and I have been missionaries here in Mexico City for nearly 24 years. Overall we've had a wonderful time serving our Lord here. Yes, there have been hard times in the ministry but the good times outweigh the bad by far. Lately, however, we've been bombarded with discouragement. It seemed like for awhile we were learning something bad every day. I didn't want to answer the phone. (of course we did) To say all this has worn us down would be an understatement. But at the same time, we have been comforted from God's Word.

God is on His Throne and He is the only one that can save us! Sometimes when Life is going good we forget who God is and who we really are. We forget who to live for. We forget who should truly be praised. Pray for us as we continue to grow in showing God's love no matter what the circumstance. Sam challenged our church from the Word on loving each other as God would even in the midst of a sticky situation. Our mission hasn't changed, folks are still hurting and need a Savior.

Psalm 66:1-5 "Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth! Sing about the glory of his name! Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds! your enemies cringe before your mighty power. Everything on earth will worship you; they will sing your praises, shouting your name in glorious songs." Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he performs for people! "

God's deeds are awesome! We remind ourselves everyday that God is good and He is in control. We as a church continue to be in a limbo state. Our church meets in three homes on Sundays. We look forward to the time when we are able to have our own place. Please continue to pray for us and our church Nueva Vida en Cristo (New Life in Christ).Jamie Hornbrookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808073333010543782noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377354267995238915.post-40572551229295057622014-03-18T12:59:00.000-05:002014-03-18T12:59:34.587-05:00Moving to the next chapter...This year in April our church Nueva Vida en Cristo, will be celebrating 10 years! I can't believe ten years have past. Our congregation has experienced both highs and lows, but it all has been good! This is how God wants us to view life and it's difficulties. It is easy to enjoy the highs but the lows are things we don't care to repeat if we have a choice. But as in all things, God has a plan and has a lesson which will shape us into reflecting more of Himself. Church planting is like the best story or movie ever written. We have gotten to watch God take people that are bogged down with sinfulness and see them blossom into tools that God is using to bring others to Himself.

Life is hard sometimes and folks at Nueva Vida are learning that they always have God on their side if they choose to do "life" His Way. As a church body we are growing in loving each other better and striving to love as God has loved us...sacrificially. But this isn't always easy is it?

Like the parable that Christ shared, we too have had some folks act as though they were followers of Christ, only to learn that when a biblical choice needed to be made, they chose a path of their own. Our hearts have ached over these folks and still ache. Nueva Vida is God's church and He is in the gardening business. He is the one that allows the seeds to mature into fruit producing plants and trees. All trees need pruning and most often it is very painful. Some trees shrivel up and die once they are pruned because they couldn't handle it. Others produce more fruit as a result of having eliminated worldliness in their lives.

We have much to be thankful for! God is always at work in our lives and others around us! His Church is growing in godliness! We are now taking that next step in the life of a church plant--buying property! The first five years we were meeting in our house until we were busting at the seams. The past five years we've had the privilege of congregating in a recreational park called Cholita. Meeting at a park is very attractive to folks and we've gotten to see who is truly serious about loving God with everything they have. Recently since our Christmas program God has brought more visitors than ever before which has been very encouraging! The ministry however has been limited to mainly activities on Sundays due to renting. We are so excited to see what this next chapter God has for us! Pray with us for wisdom as we have to find the right property at the right price! We know that God has a perfect place for us!
Pray with us as these properties might be what God has planned for us. We are looking at purchasing nearly 1/2 an acre. We could have a lot of different kinds of ministries on this size of property. The place we've been renting for the past five years has sold and the need to find something is now more urgent. Of course, this isn't a surprise to God. He has known since the beginning of Time that this would occur at this exact time and He also knows the future! We are preparing ourselves for another chapter in this wonderful adventure!Jamie Hornbrookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808073333010543782noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377354267995238915.post-66634639415088806262013-07-30T21:11:00.001-05:002013-07-30T21:11:42.162-05:00So much time has passed...I don't know where to begin. My last post was in February and much has happened in these past five months. We've had the Youth Retreat at the end of March. Kid's Day was the end of April. Mother's Day in May, Marriage Retreat the beginning of June and finally Father's Day. In between all this we had our daily routine of homeschooling which lasted until the beginning of June. June 19th we flew to Indiana to celebrate the graduation of our son Nathaniel. He completed his Master's of Divinity. We spent five weeks celebrating many things! We held a surprise 40th Wedding Anniversary Celebration for my parents! We also enjoyed a Hornbrook Gathering in Tennessee. We celebrated July 4th with the Worrell Clan! We then went to Ohio where we rejoiced with Sam Sr. when he received his 50 year pin from Baptist Mid-Missions. We received our 25 year pin! We had a wonderful time with our older children and getting to know their special friends. This is a brief overview. I will try and do better at posting. On the ministry side, God continues to do amazing things at Nueva Vida! We appreciate your prayers as we begin to start up another Bible Seminary. Sam and another missionary will be teaching on Saturday mornings starting this Fall. I will post some of the highlights from the past five months!
The training lasted 3 hours each Sunday. Our teachers learned so much. Cindy Castillo, a missionary here in Mexico City, and a dear friend, did a wonderful job of focusing on the importance of teacher prep and digging deep into God's Word. This past Sunday 11 of the 30 plus teachers gave 15 minute lessons in front of their peers and children. I was so proud of them! Our team of teachers has tripled!
We had 40 adults (20 couples) enjoy a special prepared meal of smoked pork chops with raspberry chipotle sauce, mashed potatoes, bread, pasta salad, lettuce salad and a buffet of desserts! We had a fantastic time fellowshipping, eating and playing minute to win it type of games. Of course we had our version of the Newly Wed Game also! We finished the evening with a testimony from Alberto and Karla.
The program went very well. I wish I could have captured more of it in pictures. The gospel message was presented several times in different ways, songs, miming and mini-dramas.Jamie Hornbrookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808073333010543782noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377354267995238915.post-37184088710586025172012-11-30T11:41:00.000-06:002012-11-30T20:21:18.211-06:00HomeschoolingHomeschooling has provided us the ability to give a quality education while serving the Lord full time. We have had the flexibility to drop everything at times and serve. This year Ruth Hornbrook and I are teaching the Hornbrook Gang. I teach the girls, Ruth teaches the boys and together on Tuesday and Thursdays we teach Bible, World History and Science. It has been interesting at times. Yesterday while teaching we had an emergency fireman run. My dear husband went and saved a kitten that had fallen down a drain pipe in an empty house behind us. The poor kitten had been crying for over a day. We finally figured out what had happened to the little thing. After sawing, drilling and chipping away...the kitten was freed! This was all going on while we were trying to have class. It was a circus. But we were able to accomplish the lesson for the day. Ruth and I have been working hard to make science and history come alive. This past month we've been studying the Oceania continent. We spent most of our time in Australia. The kids were all to research a recipe from Australia and bring the prepared dish to class. We enjoyed a Banana Malt, Banana Passion Fruit Pavlova (dessert!) and an Aussie Steak Sandwich. The kids were required to help prepare the food. It was wonderful! In science the children made a model of an animal cell out of play dough. We even included the younger children in this activity. In Bible we have been learning about being a Peacemaker instead of a Troublemaker. We have all been working on getting to the issues of our hearts that cause us to sin rather than to love others. Here are some pics of some of our activities!
Sometimes God allows us to experience contrasts in our life. The Bible is full of contrasts. Good vs. Evil, Sin vs. Holy, Eternal Separation vs. Eternal Unity, etc... Christ's life is a contrast to our lives. Sometimes we get to experience luxury. For example, Mt. Dew! This is a luxury I miss from the States. Family is a luxury. You all know that I miss my kids and my family. This past weekend we got to experience both luxury and simple life styles. This post is the other half; luxury. We planned this trip down to Poza Rica with the thought of enjoying a day and night in a nice hotel. We don't get away very often so we were going to splurge a bit. Of course we were thinking it would be sunny and warm so that we could take in the pool. Sometimes God allows things to get stirred up a bit. We first went to the pueblo and finca or farm. I really had a wonderful time enjoying the simple life. I told Idalia's family that I want a cabin and her clay stove. Nicole was of course wanting to get to the hotel and get in the pool. A detail you need to know is that it was drizzling and 69 degrees. I was thinking that swimming isn't an option and there is no hurry to leave the pueblo. Of course my 12 year old wasn't thinking like me. She was thinking that it possibly wasn't raining in Poza Rica. She didn't know that we were just 30 minutes from the hotel and it was raining there also. I couldn't get Nicole let go of her agenda and enjoy the moment we were in. I often find myself in this same frame of mind. I'm not getting what I want and I can't see all the wonderful blessings around me.

To make this short, the rain didn't let up and the girls didn't swim that first afternoon or evening. We did however get to enjoy a wonderful service at church during the special meetings celebrating the 41st Anniversary of Emanuel Baptist Church that my in-laws have worked in the past 14 years. Our fellow missionaries, the Pinkstons, planted this church 41 years ago. We had the privilege of working together with them when we arrived to Mexico City nearly 22 years ago. It was a goose bumpy weekend! Seeing all that God has done and is doing gives me goose bumps!

We got up Sunday morning early and let the girls swim one hour in the pool before we checked out and headed to church. We got to enjoy an out of this world breakfast buffet! The cost of a meal like this would be close to $20 a person here in the City and it was included with the price of our room! You know what we were thinking when we saw, breakfast included--cereal, hard donuts, etc.

I'm so thankful for this past weekend. The sun didn't come out 'til we were in the middle of church but the Son was shinning the whole time. We all, rich, poor or in between, have a life of luxury. We all, if having accepted Christ as our Savior, are extremely blessed and will spend Eternity with God. We will be with God where there will be no sin, no sorrow and no suffering!

Here are a few pics of our rainy stay!
We were just there the week before last to visit Sam's dad. It was a wonderful time of visiting. We went back down to celebrate Emanuel Baptist Church's 40th Anniversary. What a fantastic time of worship--- Giving glory to God for all that he has done these past 40 years! Dad Hornbrook is still serving faithfully in this church. He has taken on training many of the lay folk in Biblical Counseling. He also is doing a lot of counseling. The church presented him with an honor this weekend as well. This year Sam is celebrating 50 years of service with Baptist Mid-Missions. Wow! The turnover of missionaries here in Mexico is very big. To think of a couple serving this long is mind blowing. My in-laws have had such an impact on so many folks, me included! I have posted pics of this celebration on Facebook. The pics below go with the paragraph below. (Not sure what happened)
We also took one of my good church friends and her son with us to Veracruz. Idalia is from a pueblo that is just outside of Poza Rica. We got to go to her parents house! It is something I will never forget. I got to experience tortillas right off the comal. This is something that is PRICELESS! I also got to have fresh roasted coffee from their own coffee trees! Did I mention that the masa that was used to make the tortillas was freshly made from their own corn that they grind themselves? Just ten years ago this pueblo got electricity. Think about that for a minute... My friends go bed when the sun sets and get up when the sun rises. They are the hardest working folks. They grow food so that they can live life. I have been so spoiled. I think I can't live without my internet and I about have a fit when we lose power. The joy I experienced standing and sitting around the clay stove is something I hope I never forget. Life is about pleasing God in everything, even if there aren't many things in your life. Idalia hadn't seen her parents in over a year. It was so fun to bring her and her son to see her mom and dad. We came back to the City with oranges that were picked yesterday! I have my stash of truly freshly roasted coffee. I also got some mole that we plan to eat today. In route to the ranch we encountered a true "cattle crossing". The cows were on the roads and weren't budging. Sam had to weave in and around them. We enjoyed seeing the rolling hills of God's Creation! What a privilege we have to serve our God here! Thanking God today for allowing me to have the best life ever!Jamie Hornbrookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808073333010543782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377354267995238915.post-86704266729518556972012-11-02T15:48:00.001-05:002012-11-02T15:51:42.166-05:00God is so good!A lot has been going on here since we've returned back to the Big City! One of the highlights has been our recent baptisms. It is always encouraging to hear the testimonies of new believers. One in particular is very close to our hearts and to our family. You never know how and where God choses to work. This in and of itself causes urgency when telling others of the gospel. Reaching out to our neighbors has been a priority of ours through the years. It has become a family burden as well as a family endeavor. Our kids have been involved in sharing the good news with our neighbors throughout the years. Our son Nathaniel had a huge impact on a neighbor boy named Carlos. Carlos and his family did a fantastic job of reaching out to us when we moved here nearly 15 years ago. Carlos and Nathaniel did a lot of playing together when they were younger. The boys went separate paths through the years but touched base again in 2010. Nathaniel had graduated from Purdue and came and spent time with us here before beginning Seminary. Carlos, his girlfriend, and her family began attending our church. ( Carlos had attended through the years nearly all the English classes we offered in the summers when groups came.) Carlos had heard the gospel before but he didn't see his need for a Savior. God began working on his heart.

To make a long story short, Carlos, now nearly 24, got saved and this past month he was baptized. Our two older children in the States would have loved to have been here to hear in person Carlos' testimony. Now Carlos is leading up the youth program at our church. Carlos' girlfriend and her parents also received Christ and were baptized before we left for our furlough. The groups that have come over the years have impacted so many folks in our church. We have had folks come to Christ and get saved as a result of having attended an English class in the summer. They saw the impact of the Love of Christ on others and wanted the peace that they have seen in our visitors. We are strong believers in groups going to Mission Fields. Carlos rubbed shoulders with two groups right before he got saved. We had a group from Faith Christian School that came and served and then a Men's group from our supporting church in Livonia, Michigan. Both of these groups came when we as a family had a crisis. Sam's mother was admitted into the hospital when Faith Christian was here and she went home to glory before the other group arrived. Our church folk had to help in a big way in hosting and entertaining these groups. Our son Nathaniel flew in for the funeral for his grandmother and Carlos got to tell him in person that he was now a follower of Christ! You can imagine the joy that our son experienced.

Mothers, you never know how arranged play dates will turn out. We still believe that the most effect tool to bringing folks to Christ is friendship. Pray with us that we will continue to reach our neighbors for Christ. May we continue to work hard at reaching out and being friendly.
Benjamin, Claudia, Nicole, Gabe, Josiah and Becky--First day of school!
(Nicole with her cousins)
All I can say is, wow! Our year of furlough went by so quickly. We enjoyed reuniting with all of our family, friends and churches. You all are such a blessing to the Hornbrook family! A lot of our activity was related with the girl's schooling. Both girls were active in sports and choirs which kept us on our toes. We wouldn't have trade last year or the way we chose to do it for anything!

It was great to be in the same city as our son, Nathaniel. We got to watch and serve along side him all year! He will finish up his Masters next June and hopes to come serve with us as a short term missionary. We are looking forward to see how the Lord uses our son and his very creative gifts. Nathaniel has been able to minister to some tough kids at the Skate Park. I enjoyed getting to visit with some of the parents of these kids at a skate competition that our son organized. They all expressed how grateful they are for him and Faith Church.

Natalie is continuing her education in Indiana. She is at a junior college this year and will transfer to Purdue next Fall. Natalie is majoring in Linguistics. Natalie loves to communicate and she especially loves languages. Her heart's desire is to be a missionary also. She is open to any place on the planet!

Nicole is in the sixth grade this year. We have returned to homeschooling. We are doing things a bit different this year since Nicole is the only one at home. We have joined forces with Sam's brother's kids. They have a daughter that is practically the same age as Nicole. I'm homeschooling both of these girls. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we have all the kids together and we study Bible, Science and World History. Nicole is enjoying the company!

It was exciting to see new faces in our congregation when we got back to Nueva Vida! One family is ready to join the church and several folks are anxious to get baptized and join as well! There have been some disappointments. Some of our folks have given in to worldly thinking and aren't willing to stay committed to their marriages. This breaks our hearts. Pray with us as we counsel these folks from God's Word. May they repent, turn from their sinful way of thinking and acting, and begin trusting in God's Word and Ways of living.

Thank you so much for your love and support. We are excited to be back and a bit overwhelmed. Our church did so well in our absence. We are anxious to see what the Lord has ahead for us!Jamie Hornbrookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808073333010543782noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377354267995238915.post-63646967334699753252012-04-16T07:45:00.000-05:002012-04-16T07:45:09.623-05:00Very Encouraged!I just thought I would update you on all that has been happening... First we have thoroughly enjoyed visiting our churches. God is blessing each one in very special ways. We are encouraged to see them all growing and excited about reaching their communities around them.

We have been extremely busy with the girls school activities. It is hard to believe that we are in the last stretch. We have stayed busy attending volleyball and basketball games for both Nicole and Natalie. It was a real thrill to see Faith Christian live out the gospel on the court. I had the privilege of helping coach Nicole's 5th and 6th grade team. We have also enjoyed listening to the school choirs and the musical that the high school put on. Natalie had a small part in it. Both girls have excelled in the classroom as well. We thank God for the opportunity our children have had to attend christian schools during our furlough years.

We have especially enjoyed getting to spend a lot of time with our son this furlough. He is finishing up his second year of seminary. He is learning so much that will help prepare him for full time ministry. He is still leaning towards missions. Our oldest daughter Natalie, is excited to begin a new chapter of life. She will be attending Purdue and studying linguistics and foreign languages. She will live with my parents and attend Faith Church. With this in mind, you all can come down and celebrate Natalie's graduation with us. We will have an Open House following the graduation ceremony on May 26th. Health update: My shoulder has done unbelievably much better! We are praising God for this! I have seen great improvement over the past couple of weeks. I would say that my shoulder is probably at 80%! There is still a little rotation that I still haven't regained.

Thank you for your continued prayers!Jamie Hornbrookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808073333010543782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377354267995238915.post-28901395034458965102011-08-11T10:11:00.000-05:002011-08-11T10:11:24.348-05:00Where has the time gone? This summer has sped by. Most of June we spent packing up our house in Mexico City getting ready for a church family to move in. We are thankful for Oscar, Araceli and Tanya. This family is lovingly taking care of our doggies as well. (at least two of them--our puppy is at another church family's home)

July 5th we arrived here in Indiana. Flying up rather than driving up is really nice. There are some draw backs. One is that we don't get to slowly adapt back to American culture. Driving up allows us three days to enjoy all the green grass, crops, etc. We also have time to adapt back to speaking in English to folks. It took us a couple of days to switch gears. Now we don't hesitate when responding. Our first thoughts aren't Spanish ones. We have also stayed busy getting the girls ready for school. I got most of their shopping taken care of before my surgery. It was a good thing since a lot of my time is spent going and doing Physical Therapy. My surgery didn't do all that we had hoped. I'm still pretty stuck but I am seeing improvement. I am continually told that no one has ever seen a more frozen shoulder than mine. Good thing God is the Great Physician and He already knows the end result and it is perfect! Sam and the girls did some traveling in July while I was recuperating. They went to Michigan and saw our dear friends at Berean Baptist Church in Livonia. They had fun touring the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. They also went to Nappanee, Indiana. Kind of a bummer that I wasn't able to go. Thank you so much for all your prayers for our transition, health, etc. God is good and we are so blessed to have you all as our friends.
This is a City that is a miniature world. Children can work at Walmart, DHL, a bank, Coke plant, Ice Cream Factory, etc. It is the coolest place ever for kids. Our crew didn't want to leave even after being there 7 1/2 hours. They learned some great lessons as well. They worked in a dentist office and the girls performed surgery at the hospital. There was construction work like painting and laying bricks. Another thing they did was go underground and see what actually is under the streets. Natalie and I enjoyed a day at the mall. We went to Saks Fifth Avenue just so we could say we've been "shopping" there.
It had been awhile since we were there. Dad appears to be adjusting to this new chapter of life. We were able to do some jobs around the house. Sam Sr. is hoping to relocate in Poza Rica. He would like to downsize and move closer to church. There is a house next door to the church that is available but right now the owner isn't willing to lower the price. The house would need some work. We went and saw Ellen's grave site. Dad ordered a nice gravestone that is an open bible. Continue to pray for Sam Sr. We will be leaving for our furlough July 5th and won't be able to visit him here in Mexico for another year. He is wanting to fly up for Thanksgiving and we are encouraging him to fly up and visit his kids this summer if he can get his move made. The church family are really helping Dad in every facet of life. We will have to rely on them to help Dad pack up and make the move. We are very thankful for God's Family!
What a joy to hear the adult choir perform several specially selected songs. Their orchestra was absolutely impressive. We all sat there in amazement to see and hear what God has done. We had the privilege to be involved in this church for the first ten years of our ministry here. The young people are now married and their teenage children are serving in the choirs and orchestra. This is what Heaven will be like. We will get to listen to how our awesome God was faithful to His promises and rejoice and give all the Glory to Him. It was wonderful to have Beulah Pinkston fly in for the special occasion. We loved working with the Pinkstons when we came to the field twenty years ago. The folks at Maranatha will always have a special place in the Hornbrooks hearts.
We got to hear four beautiful testimonies of how God used people, events and even very difficult trials, to bring folks to Himself. Rene, Ofelia and Michell are all from the same family. Husband, wife and daughter were all saved within the past year. God used a trial of their two year grandson suffering and nearly dying to bring this family to the foot of the cross. Michell's boyfriend is our son Nathaniel's childhood friend. It was through the friendship of our son with Carlos that brought these dear folks to church. Carlos, Rene, Ofelia and Michell have all come to know the Lord. Gaby, the other person baptized, has heard the Word all her life. She came to know the Lord when she was six. It is wonderful to grow up in a Christian home. Yesterday we also had another baby/parent dedication. Zuriel is such a blessing. Lety, his mother, had a very difficult pregnancy. She was in bed most of it. Zuriel was born premature and just a month ago was allowed to come to church. We are so thankful for Sergio and Lety and their desire to bring Zuriel up in the ways of the Lord.
As we approach our departure date, we do it with mixed emotions. A part of us wants to go to the States and be with our family and friends and yet another part of us doesn't want to leave. So why do missionaries put themselves in these difficult and uncomfortable positions? There are a variety of reasons, to be honest, unless you are a missionary, you may not understand. I've heard from very dear folk that we missionaries should be used to leaving and saying good-byes. Listen, just because we've been doing it for 20 years doesn't make it easier.
Twenty years ago we left our family and friends in Indiana and made the long trek to Mexico City. At the time we had a three year old son. It wasn't easy leaving but having our little family to lean on as we went was comforting. It was a new adventure and this is how we presented it to our son. Children are very adaptable and look forward to new things. At least this is how we looked at it at the time and it worked. We adjusted well even though the circumstances around us were very difficult. (long story that I don't want to go into at this time) Fast forward to today... Now we have three children. One left our nest when he was just 17 years old. We sent him to the States for his senior year in high school. I'll be honest, I was miserable that year. I wanted to be with my son and experiencing all the things that other parents get to experience when their child is a senior. I grew tremendously in my prayer life that year. Much of it done with lots of tears.
We as a family take a year furlough because we believe it is important for our children to experience a school year in a regular school. Homeschooling has been nice but it has been difficult and sometimes impossible to give our children all that they need to prepare them for the next chapter; college. We don't have co-op groups here on the field. We don't have libraries either. We have been very fortunate to be able to bring down many books and other materials to help our children along.
Believe it or not we've had folks in the States question us on taking a full year. I've heard some say that, "I've never gotten a year's vacation". Let me say right here, our furlough is not a vacation. We do a lot of driving, and then some more driving and we don't arrive at a resort where we can turn off our phones, sit at the pool, forget about our work, etc. We do get to visit with some of the bestest folks in the world. We also have the privilege to worship together and man do we eat good. We get to rejoice in all that the Lord is doing in Mexico City and around the world. In many cases, this is better than a vacation!
We plan to be gone 13 months this furlough. We want to enroll our daughter Natalie in college and make sure that she is adjusting well to this before we return to the field. It is getting harder rather than easier for us to leave the States as we will leave two of our children there. I know they are there with my parents, a good church, a great college group, etc. But still... I'm a mother and it still is hard. We've gone a whole year without seeing our son when he was in college. We are very thankful for our special blessing: Nicole. I can't imagine coming back to Mexico City without a child. This will be difficult for her. She won't have anyone in the house to play with. She has done pretty well in this category but she also will not have a sibling to talk to, to tease and believe it or not, to argue with.
This furlough year is also a time for us to pay attention to our health. We all will have medical work done on us to make sure we are doing all that we can to be good stewards of our bodies. This is the only time we pay attention to our health. We don't do yearly check-ups on any of us. We only go to the doctor when we feel deathly ill. That rarely happens. We have had to tend to our daughter Natalie and her back issues. We are so thankful for the loving care she received last summer. Her life is so much better than it was a year ago. She will always have some pain but she has learned how to deal with it through exercises that help relax the area, yet strengthen her core.
We also use our furlough year to get more training. We go to conferences that will help us to be more effective missionaries. We learn so much from visiting each and every one of our support churches. None of our churches are a like and each one has strengths which they are maximizing in different ways and different ministries. We use all this here in our church plant. We get to try things that we've seen in our churches back in the States. This is one of our best ways to be creative in the ministry.
So, furloughs are great for our family and our ministry. We go through adjustments that seem uncomfortable in the moment and God uses them to grow us. Our children learn what it is like to be a stranger in a new place and they go back and work hard to make others feel at home. That's worth it isn't it? We all continue to grow in our understanding that this Place is all just temporary. There is so much better in the next Chapter--Heaven! This is truly what it is all about! We all are serving Him, bringing others to Him so that in eternity we can all worship Him!
Furloughs are just apart of God's plan for the Hornbrook family and many other missionary families. Furloughs come in many different shapes and sizes. Sometimes the purpose is to raise more funds, sometimes they are useful for more training but they all serve great purposes. I'm so thankful for our Home Church and all the love they have for their missionaries. We always feel welcomed, loved and very well cared for. Our church here in Mexico City has had to grow fast as we are leaving our church plant without a full time pastor. The folks have jumped in and taken ownership of all the responsibilities that are involved in keeping a church of 90 to 100 going! Us leaving is a good thing. Our church family here in Mexico City has had to interact more with one another and has had to learn some valuable lessons in communication. This is all good. Pray with us as we maximize on our time left here and as we adjust to life back in the States. Sometimes we missionaries come across as odd or different. Don't let this keep you from getting to know us. We've been out of the U.S. culture long enough to not know all the lingo but I believe we all can learn from each other!

Jamie Hornbrookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808073333010543782noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377354267995238915.post-28797484146335543102011-05-09T11:00:00.000-05:002011-05-09T11:00:07.989-05:00Christina the Church RabbitOur children enjoyed the Christopher Church Mouse books and videos. This is an excellent way to teach children biblical principles using a cute little mouse and his family. They lived in the church building and listened to the preaching and teaching of the Word. Well, at Nueva Vida we have our version; Christina the Church Rabbit. Our church is nicely located on a small recreational park. All of us enjoy going to church each week just to enjoy things like grass, trees, and even animals. Surrounding the church there are goats, cows, a horse and now... a bunny. The children love arriving and trying to find the cute white bunny. Two weeks ago my job was trying to keep a little kitten from coming into the church auditorium during the service. That was quite the task. I gently kept putting it on the other side of the fence and it continued to find it's way back to me. Each week we are amazed at our Creator God through the hearing of His Word. Sometimes we get to enjoy some of His creation while we are listening!
We had a great turn out since several of our church families use the weekend to visit their mother's. We had a meal catered in and the dads and young people served the moms. It was a wonderful time to reflect on the mother's in our lives and also to see that God in His perfect plan designed the family. Aren't you glad we have His Word to guide is in parenting and in life?
Here in Mexico we celebrate Kid's Day. It is a national holiday to focus on children. We used the opportunity to invite folks to church. We had games, picnic, piñatas, and pool time for the children! The visitors got to hear a very clear presentation of the gospel. Mexico has plenty to celelbrate in the month of May! These are great opportunities to reach out to the community around us.
It was a great time to focus on all that God has done and is doing. We had a great turn out. It was fun to have our former members Ernesto, Estrella and their boys come back from Monterrey and be with us. They are doing a fantastic job of serving God where He has placed them. We miss them terribly but we are excited to hear how they are faithful to our Savior. The Passover Meal is very interesting with all the symbolism involved with each food item. Some of the flavors aren't my favorite but it is a very good reminder of the Sacrifice that was made on our behalf. (lamb) The bitter herbs to me are a reminder that God is ultimately in control of everything, including the difficult times. Sam played the part of a man that came through a time machine and told us all of the events that lead up to the Last Supper and more. A few children in the church came up to Sam later and thanked him for the mini-drama. The drama helped tie the whole evening together.
It is truly amazing to see how God works in restoring folks to Himself and to others. Daniel and Lizbeth were a couple that were ready to end their marriage. They got invited by one of our church families to come to church. That was over a year ago. Now God has brought their family together! They are excited to be growing and changing in the likeness of Christ! They use to be a family of three but God in His Wonderful Way has made them a family of four.
